John Hiatt Picture
John Hiatt's sales have never quite matched his reputation. Hiatt's songs were covered successfully by everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Ronnie Milsap, and Dr. Feelgood to Iggy Pop, Three Dog Night, and the Neville Brothers, yet it took him 13 years to reach the charts himself. Of course, it nearly took him that long to find his own style. Hiatt began his solo career in 1974, and over the next decade he ran through a number of different styles from rock & roll to new wave pop before he finally settled on a rootsy fusion of rock & roll, country, blues, and folk with his 1987 album Bring the Family.

Learning How To Love You Lyrics

John Hiatt

Im 34 years old now
And Ive come to you
Baby I dont even know how
I got through
From the first kiss in the schoolyard
Til the last heart broke in two
I didnt know it would be so hard
Learning how to love you
There was a life that I was living
In some cracked rearview
Where no future was given
To a heart untrue
Still I thought that I was so strong
That my will could force me through
I didnt know it would be so long
Learning how to love you
Bridge:
I might have never realized
The courage in your kiss
And the sweet forgiveness in your eyes
Babe I know youve walked a mile
In someone elses shoes
Maybe youve left some faces smiling
Walking off your blues
And I dont pretend to know how
You ever saw it through
cause I only got to where I am now
Learning how to love you
